Ralph’s Blog Archives – 2000
Ralph Shaw, our Illustrious Leader, writes:
My purpose in starting this uke-log of the meetings and activities of the Vancouver Ukulele Circle is to give those people who are unable to be at the a meetings a chance to get a flavour of what they missed. I can tell you now that not all the information will be entirely accurate. As I sit down to update this uke-log in the days after any given meeting I will be sure to have forgotten some key moments and one or two worthy performances and I hope that feelings won’t be hurt. I will do my best but if you notice any omissions or major inaccuracies please feel free to email them to Wendy Cutler so that corrections can be made.

Vancouver Ukulele Circle Meetings 2000
Tuesday, December 19, 2000
Gary Shilling came with his baritone uke – a nice addition to our sound as we played Christmas songs and others. People brought Xmas goodies. Jonathan (Virginia’s husband) fixed the VCR, and we watched Tiny Tim at the start of his career in 1968 and again in 1974 and then in 1996.
Our CBC meeting was played on This Morning on Tuesday Dec 5, and I was interviewed on December 8. I took $2 or blank tapes from people who wanted dubs. Robyn offered to make plastic covered signs for the entranceway.

Ralph on a healing course. Meeting was run by Paul and Virginia. VCR still not working. Scott Lazzarra came. Paul taught Happy Trails. Guy brought 6 music stands for the VUC.

Ann Penman from the CBC came to the meeting and recorded our introductions and tune-up, Singing in the Rain, and various comments from people. I gave out chord charts. Three new people: Guy Costanzo, Lorene Ruymar, Jim Burnett. Lorene brought a slide guitar. Jim works on Co-op Radio. Guy has a Larrivee. The video didn’t work.
I did a strumming workshop using When I’m Cleaning Windows.
During the break, I signed people up for individual performances. Robyn attempted Betty the Yeti but forgot the words and still received enthusiastic applause. Brian played; Paul did Sunny Side of the Street, and I joined in on harmonica. Colin brought various books and videos for people to borrow. Virginia was in Paris.

Location: 4th floor, Common Room at the co-op where I live.
Inaugural meeting. Present were Ralph Shaw, Brian Lohnes, Lynn Halifax, Karen Carlyle, Virginia Ise, Robyn, Paul Hoosen, Colin McCubbin, Barb Mortell, Eleanore Dunn.
We began with introductions. We discussed what key to use, decided on GCEA, however ukes tuned in other keys are perfectly acceptable. We played Singing in the Rain, in F, and Paddelin’ Madelin’. We watched 20 minutes of Roy Smeck Wizard of the Strings. People brought drinks and snacks. Took a photo of us all at the end. Played various songs people brought.
